2012 PCA Zone 2 DE

Virginia International Raceway

About this event

Zone 2 returns to VIR on March 15-17, 2013 for its famous 3 day Drivers Ed.

Join us for three fabulous days on the Full Course at Virginia International Raceway. This is a ‘must do’ event for 2013.  Last year we attracted drivers from as far away as Chicago, Florida and beyond.  As with past events, we plan on having a scrumptious dinner on Saturday.  Plenty of time to reunite with old friends and bench race with new ones.  Don’t delay, last year the event sold out very quickly.

Registration for PCA members opens January 14, 2013.  Registration for non-PCA members opens a week later on January 21, 2013.

As if three great days of fabulous track time at VIR aren’t enough your Hospitality chair is pleased to announce a few additions to the Zone 2 DE weekend.  Immediately following Friday’s track time all are invited to join us for our traditional Welcome Party.  Complimentary beer, wine and soft beverages served along with our Zone 2 Chef. Raising the bar over last year with some unexpected twists and turns to the traditional Nacho offering.  2013 will be an even better surprise.  First beer drawn when the track goes cold Friday afternoon. Don’t miss this event, compliments of Zone 2.

Saturday evening your event registration includes admission to our Bavarian themed banquet dinner. . An authentic Irish (it is St Patrick's day) buffet dinner along with cash bar are sure to be enjoyed. Additional tickets for friends and family are available at registration and throughout the weekend at the registration garage. Price is complimentary for registered participants.

As in years before Zone 2 will be supporting and raising funds for the Susan Kasdas Colon Cancer Foundation. This fundraiser is in memory and honor of PCA Chesapeake Region Member Lynn Eckels. Lynn was the Registrar for the early Zone 2 at VIR events and also PCA National 2003 Enthusiast of the Year. Track touring laps will be available during lunch on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. At only $20 per car it’s a great way for friends and family to drive ‘the line’.  Please note no unmuffled cars during lunch quite hour.

Bring your dollars along for the Saturday evening Banquet, additional fundraising events will be a 50-50 raffle with a chance to win big money (well maybe enough for a tire) and new for this year ‘Porsche Bingo’ with your chance to win free admission to an upcoming Zone 2 DE!  Along with door prizes and a few surprises Zone 2 strives for this to be your best DE experience

Accommodations in area hotels are plentiful.  Please search in either Danville, Virginia; South Boston, Virginia or Roxboro, North Carolina, depending on your preference.

Please make sure all your guests are registered and have signed waivers. Drive safe, smart and have a great weekend. As always, “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people”.

Event requirements

  1. Participants must be at least 18 years of age, must have a valid driver’s license, and be a PCA member or member of a Zone 2 approved guest organization.  A valid driver’s license and membership card must be presented at registration.  Only Porsches or primary marques of any guest organization shall be driven on the track.  Zone 2 reserves the right to reject any applicant for any reason.
  2. Guests are welcome; if under 18 years of age they must remain in spectator areas and are not allowed on the track, in the pits, or on the flagging stations.
  3. No off-leash pets are permitted.
  4. No alcoholic beverages may be consumed by anyone (participant or guest) during the event.
  5. Each participant will drive in one run group only.  Exceptions must be approved by the Event Chair.
  6. All cars must be pre-teched prior to, but no earlier than 4 weeks before the event.  Drivers MUST have completed BOTH registration and final car tech PRIOR to the driver’s meeting (approximately 8:00 AM) or they will not be allowed to drive that day.
  7. Participants must wear a SNELL 00 or later approved helmet.  All open car drivers (including Cabriolets & open Targas) must wear face shields or goggles.
  8. Participants must wear rubber-soled shoes, long pants, and a long sleeved shirt.  (Natural, not synthetic fibers)
  9. Non-participants are not permitted in either student or instructor cars. No student may ride with another student.  (Note: Instructors riding in student cars and students riding in instructor cars at reduced speed for instructional purposes is permitted.)
  10. Students in an instructor’s car or instructors in a student’s car must have available and wear the same restraint system as is being worn by the driver.  (Seats are considered part of the restraint system.)
  11. Harnesses (optional) must include a sub strap and be mounted in a manner consistent with the manufacturer’s recommendations and SCCA requirements.  Harnesses may only be used with seats designed to accommodate them.
  12. Fire extinguishers (optional) must be securely fastened metal-to-metal.  (Minimum 2.5 lb., two strap metal bracket is recommended.)
  13. All open cars, including Cabriolets and Boxsters, must have an approved roll bar mounted at least two inches above the driver’s helmet.  This also applies to the passenger side if the car will be used by a student and instructor.  (Until an approved after-market solution is found, many Boxsters with taller drivers will not meet the requirement and not qualify for participation.)  Roll hoops do not meet track specifications.  Roll extensions for Boxsters are available from Brey-Krause.
  14. All open cars, Targas and 914’s must run with tops up unless they have a full roll cage.
  15. All sunroofs must be closed.
  16. Driver and passenger side windows must be fully down.  Use of window nets is not permitted.
  17. Street tires must have a minimum tread depth of 2/32” completely around at least two grooves, excluding wear bars.  R-rated tires and slicks must have visible tread indicators around the circumference.
  18. Passing is only permitted with a signal from the car being passed, and only in straight-aways defined as passing zones.  All passes must be completed (passing car completely by the passed car) before the turn-in cone is reached.  Additionally, those running in black and red must adhere to the PCA Expanded Passing Guidelines..

Expanded Passing Program: The Event Chairman may choose to implement the expanded passing program. With expanded passing, passing may occur on all portions of the track, including all turns. If expanded passing is allowed at an event, it shall follow these restrictions:
    • Expanded passing will ONLY be run in the Instructors run group which may include non-instructors.
    • All passing must be initiated WITH A HAND SIGNAL.
    • All signals MUST BE demonstratively clear and there must be one for each car.
    • All signals are “real time”. If you initiate a pass with a signal, expect a car to pass at the time you give the signal, not at the next straight away.
    • All signals are a contract between two drivers. If you initiate, let the car pass. If you are given a signal and decline, you must wave off the signal.
    • No more than two cars side by side in the turn.
    • When entering a turn with another car, NO ONE OWNS THE TURN. Each driver is entitled to 50% of the track as if there was a white line through the center of the turn.
    • The only passengers allowed in the expanded passing run groups are qualified instructors.
    • All drivers of the designated run group must participate in expanded passing. Any driver who does not care to participate must be moved to another run group.
This program is self-policed and any passing done without a signal or over aggressive driving may result in exclusion from the program or may be dealt with as decided by Regional DE management.
  19.  There is a mandatory Black Flag pit stop for a spin or “four wheel off” (or worse) occurrence.  Two Black flags for these or other driving infractions in a day will result in the termination of driving privileges for remainder of the day.
