M117 Engine Challenges

Zoom Video Teleconferencing

About this event

Join us for a tech session on solving some M117 engine challenges on Wednesday, January 24th at 7 pm EST via Zoom.  Peachtree Past President and Technical Director Gary Edwards will present a discussion on what he’s learned about the M117 engine over two and a half months while working to fix an irritating drivability problem with a 1973 450SL.

This car was rescued by one of our members; it was found sitting outside ignored for a number of years, and, of course, had no service records and even the mileage was unknown.   Gary comments, “I learned a whole bunch of things about this engine that I never really wanted to know, but what I learned can be useful to anyone with a car that has a M116 or M117 engine.  This engine was used in many V-8 Mercedes cars from the late 1960’s until the early 1990’s.  There are a specific set of failures that can inadvertently cause engine destruction that anyone with one of these engines should be aware of.”   During the session there will be plenty of time for questions; off topic Mercedes technical questions will be fine, though Gary isn’t certain that he will have answers….

The tech session will be conducted via Zoom Video Teleconference.  No NEED to leave your home.  You can easily join the ZOOM meeting by computer, IPhone, IPad, Android device, or by telephone (though if you join by phone you'll miss out on the pictures). We intend to record this presentation, so if you don't want to show up in the video or audio, leave your camera off and stay muted.

Ground Rules:  1.  Stay muted unless called upon.  2. Enter the Zoom meeting with the same name you register under. 3. Chat your questions "to everybody".  We'll pause periodically to answer questions, but if you know the answer to a question go ahead and chat an answer.

Longer term members will recognize that this is a repeat of a Tech Session we did in March of 2020, so if you participated then you might want to skip this one. We are redoing this one both to reach out to newer members and to record the session, as this is the only one of our ZOOM tech sessions that we don't have up on our You Tube channel, MBCA Peachtube.

The registration fee is $10. Unfortunately, motorsportreg.com will typically add their fee to this as well.  Though we sometimes get complaints about charging for a Zoom tech session, it's important to realize that we incur costs to put this on.  We have also found that we get a much more accurate number of attendees if we charge a nominal fee, and it's important to know how many participants we'll have so we can arrange for a larger meeting limit if necessary.

On the Tuesday before the event you will receive an e-mail with the link to the ZOOM meeting. We will plan to have the ZOOM meeting up by 6:45 p.m. EST so we can hopefully get technical issues out of the way.  Don’t wait to register, as we are limited to only 100 attendees.  For questions, call Gary Edwards by e-mail at edwardsgw@nu-z.net or by phone at (757) 831-9556.
