About this event
Our first karting event at Atlanta Motorsports Park (AMP)!
On Sunday March 20th, we’ll gather for karting at Atlanta Motorsports Park in Dawsonville, Georgia. We'll have our own MBCA sessions, interspersed with their regular public karting sessions, for a total of four sessions. This will be an afternoon event, starting with an orientation talk in their karting conference room at 12:15, with track time starting at 1 pm. We are not providing food for this event. We should be done with the sessions about 2:30 or so, though participants are free to sign up for more sessions afterwards if they want.
The kart track at AMP has the largest elevation change for a kart track in the United States and it is designed like a racetrack. It's a great track and it's fun to drive. The karts are new (about 6 months old) and are just getting broken in.
Karting at AMP runs rain or shine, unless there is lightning close to the track or extensive water puddling on the track. As we saw in our December karting, a wet track can present a fun and interesting challenge.
The cost will be $100 per person, we’ll need a minimum of 12 people to put this on. We’ll plan on a maximum of 25 people with MBCA members and their guests having priority.
You can bring your own helmet, though eye protection is absolutely required. Closed face helmets with visors down are the norm, open face helmets will likely be acceptable with appropriate safety protection for the eyes. Loaner helmets are available.
The minimum age is 12 years old (and 54 inches tall). With prior arrangements, a double kart can be provided for a parent that wants a younger child to ride along (child must be 5 or older and at least 40 inches tall).
Participants younger than 18 require a minor waiver (to be filled out/turned in at the facility gate). If the parent is not attending, then the form must be notarized. The minor waiver is available on the AMP website; here is a link: minor waiver
Peachtree President and event planner Gary Edwards comments, “Karting is an excellent way to hone your driving skills and learn about handling, without the risk of damaging your expensive car. Note that essentially all of today's professional drivers start out in karts.”
Who should come to this event? Anyone who wants to learn more about driving or who enjoys performance driving. It’s a low cost, high learning rate and low risk option that augments what we learned from autocrossing or from textbooks.
The address is 20 Duck Thurmond Road, Dawsonville, Georgia 30534. After entering via the guard shack, turn right and follow the road around behind the garages to the kart track.
Event requirements
Participants need to be at least 12 years of age and 54 inches tall. For these younger folks, the parents will need to sign the minor waiver form, and if the parents are not present, we will need the parent's signature notarized on the waiver form, which can be downloaded from the track's website.
There will be no alcohol consumption before driving karts. Participants will not intentionally contact (i.e. run into) other karts. Intentional ramming and excessive contact may result in loss of driving privileges. Participants must attend the safety briefing at 12:15 am before karting begins.
