CAROC/Lotus Corps Carl Grabowski Drivers Ed. Day

Blackhawk Farms Raceway

About this event

Please join us at Blackhawk Farms Raceway, as CAROC and Lotus Corps are proud to join forces in presenting the Twenty-Second Annual Carl Grabowski Drivers Education and Lapping Day.
All vehicle makes and car clubs are welcome, this is NOT an exclusive event for Lotus or Alfa owners.

You’ll be able to:

  • Drive your car closer to its limits
  • Learn how to drive fast SAFELY
  • Hone your skills at one of the best tracks in the Midwest
  • Enjoy the company of other sports car nuts

For whom is this event intended?

This is a day for all levels of driver skill. Depending upon experience, you will be placed in one of three run groups.

Green Group C –       Drivers with moderate to no track experience. In-car and classroom instruction will be provided.

Yellow Group B –      Fairly experienced drivers who have attended quite a few Driving Schools or track events, very experienced drivers in slower cars.

Red Group A –          Very experienced drivers who have attended many Driving Schools, track events, or those with race experience.

What kind of car do I need to participate?

Make of car does not matter.  You can come with your daily driver, your sports car, or your race car. As long as the vehicle meets the requirements in the Tech Inspection Form, you will be allowed to run. (Blackhawk Farms Raceway does not permit electric vehicles on track, however.)

The minimum safety equipment that is required is:

  • Helmet with a Snell rating of SA2010 or later – No DOT or motorcycle helmets (e.g. Snell M2015) allowed.
  • Long sleeve shirt made of cotton or fire resistant fabric.
  • Long pants made of cotton or fire resistant fabric.
  • Closed-toed shoes.
  • You are encouraged to bring any other safety apparel you have!
  • Most importantly, bring a good attitude. This is an Educational Event - not a race, not a time trial, not a competition. You will get plenty of track time.

What will it cost?

  • The base entry fee is $349, which includes 2.5 hours of total track time in SEVEN track sessions for experienced drivers, as well as lunchtime touring. Early-bird and club discounts may reduce this cost. Novices and first-timers will receive classroom instruction and two hours of total track time in six sessions for $299. A late fee will apply within two weeks of the event.
  • For those who only wish to do lunchtime touring, the cost is $49 in advance, $50 day of the event.

Event requirements

  • All vehicle makes and car clubs are welcome, this is NOT an exclusive event for Lotus or Alfa owners.
  • All drivers AND passengers in run sessions must be 18 years or older. Participants must have a valid driver’s license. Only instructors can ride with novice drivers.
  • Lapping is open lapping, running as a group with passing permitted only on designated straightaways with a point-by. Drivers and cars are divided into groups based on experience and speed potential. Cars are started individually to allow spacing. Yellow signs mark the beginning and end of each passing zone.
  • A classroom driving school will be held for novices, and in-car instruction will be available.
  • For lapping, a current automotive racing helmet with a Snell rating of SA2010 or later is needed – No DOT or motorcycle helmets (e.g. Snell M2015) allowed. You should be able to rent one at the track, but check in advance -- (815) 389-2000.
  • Open cars require a roll bar for lapping (but not for touring)
  • Lots of track time! We'll run all day, one group after another, with breaks for lunch and Touring sessions at midday.
  • There is a cafe and lunch is available at the track. There is also a store with snacks and convenience items. Fuel is available, but pricey.
  • A basic safety inspection is conducted on all cars before they are allowed to participate in Lapping, but you are responsible for making sure the car is safe and ready. A list of items to check will be included in the registration packet that will be sent to you. You are responsible for teching your car before the event, and will be required to submit the signed off tech form at registration.
  • Touring is driving on the track, at a brisk pace, but with strict speed limitations. Roll bars are NOT required in open cars for Touring, as you won't be driving at the limit. Passengers are allowed in the touring session, so bring your friends and family (no age restrictions).

Please be sure to print and fill out the forms below, and bring them to the event (not needed for Touring).
