Bring your Curta and Stevens rally calculators for an old-fashion TSD rally. We plan a fun day of driving interesting roads in the Marin and Sonoma county areas on a TSD (Time-Speed-Distance) Rally. Cars will start from the north parking lot of the Petaluma Marina parking lot next to the Sheraton Hotel, 745 Baywood Drive, Petaluma, CA and travel to the Bodega Bay area using the provided rally route instructions. Coffee and pastries will be provided at the beginning of the rally. The rally is expected to last about 5 hours, and will end at a location that is suitable for a nice afternoon meal, which will not be paid for by the club.
No special equipment is needed; however, all cars should bring a clipboard, paper, pen, an accurate time of day watch, and a simple calculator. Rally-type odometers are optional and allowed but no rally computers will be allowed in this non-equipped/SOP type event. All cars must have a driver and navigator to participate. Trophies will be awarded both driver and navigator 1st through 3rd place.
What is a Time/Speed/Distance Rally?
A TSD rally is a precision driving event, and not a race. Participants are provided a set of general instructions used to guide participates along the rally route using event specific rally instructions. The rally instructions provide each rally car with the exact route and speed to travel along the route. The route is designed to challenge your ability to follow the rally route exactly using the provided instructions. Cars will encounter checkpoints along the route, where they must stop and be timed-in by the check point crew. Checkpoint crews will "time in" each car, as they pass the checkpoint sign, which is located along the instructed route to the nearest second. Each car receives a penalty point for each second they are early or late to each checkpoint. The car with the lowest score wins the event. Participants do not have to utilize mathematics to calculate their exact time; all they have to do is follow the rally route and drive at the exact instructed speed to win. All instructed average speeds will be lower than the posted limit. However the basic mathematical principal participants use is the following formula.
Distance = Rate x Time.
