Monday morning leaves a couple options for folks from getting up late and just cruising down to Greenville to another full day of backroads driving or something in between, as there will be a few points throughout the day where we will cross major freeways. For those continuing on the backroads route, we will regroup in the parking lot at 8:30am and setoff for Donut Diva at the base of the Back of the Dragon which is about an hour drive and it ends just off I-81. After Back of the Dragon, will be a chance to break off and just hit the freeway and be in Greenville for a late lunch and participate in the afternoon karting at LeMans Karting.
For those continuing on we’ll pass Mt. Rogers and head south through Cherokee and Pisgah National Forests past backbone falls and several other scenic sites. We’ll stop at the 7 Trails Grill in Damascus, VA around 11:30am for Lunch. Damascus is about a 3 hour drive to Greenville. For the backroad warriors a full afternoon of exciting roads awaits you! We will continue south into Tennessee past Watauga Lake and the surrounding mountains before moving southeast into North Carolina and past the second Marion of the day and into some flatter terrain. We’ll crossover a few more mountains at the border with South Carolina and reach Greenville around 6:30 which is dusk. The full day route covers ~380 miles in 8 hours or so.
Expect a stop about every hour to hour and a half on the way down for bathroom breaks and chances to get gas. The full backroad route over the two days will be around 700 miles and 15-16 hours of driving.
